A new launch at Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI):

Delft University of Technology, Utrecht University, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, and ProRail. The aim of the lab is to develop AI technology to increase the overall logistic rail capacity and make public transportation more reliable, sustainable, and resilient.

RAIL Lab, led by Associate Professor Marjan van den Akker and Full Professor Mathijs de Weerdt, will focus on improving the interaction between human operators and automated planning tools. Moreover, the lab will develop algorithms and methodologies for planning and monitoring complex systems such as railway systems, and finding the most promising infrastructure changes to extend the capacity of railway hubs.

By developing AI to respond quickly and adequately to changing circumstances, RAIL Lab aims to enable trains to run with higher frequency and better punctuality, maximize seat availability for passengers and provide reliable estimates of available capacity and transport times for cargo companies. To ensure a tangible impact on society, the RAIL Lab will use the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a compass. The lab especially focuses on SDG 9; Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation, and SDG 11; Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.”
